Este mes de junio les traemos un increíble proyecto desde prácticamente el otro lado del mundo. Música electrónica con influencias del hip hop y sonidos impactantes a los que deberás poner mucha atención para poder asimilarlos. Su nombre es Noga Erez y es originaria de la ciudad de Tel-Aviv. Su hogar de la infancia era un lugar donde la música tenía un papel muy importante y siempre estuvo interesada en todas las formas de expresión artística. Después de haber crecido en un ambiente tenso y altamente político la música se convirtió en su refugio y su arma a la vez. Incursionó en la actuación y la danza, pero hoy en día se dedica a producir música con un poderoso mensaje y creemos que debes escucharla. Hace algunos meses lanzó varios sencillos a través de las plataformas de streaming y hoy ya podemos disfrutar de su álbum debut titulado ‘Off The Radar’. Esto fue lo que nos contó.
¿Cómo iniciaste en la música?
El arte siempre fue una parte muy importante de mi vida y de mi educación, creo que es algo que está muy arraigado en mi. Pero mi atención no siempre estuvo centrada en la música, en realidad siempre me gustó experimentar con todo lo que tuviera que ver con el arte, especialmente el arte que tuviera que ver con el escenario. Tomé clases de actuación, de danza, pero en cierto punto entendí que la música era lo que en realidad me apasionaba. Aprendí a tocar diferentes instrumentos y después a componer, producir y sobre arreglos.

Tu música tiene sonidos muy peculiares, ¿cómo los creas? o ¿de dónde vienen?
Dado que creo mi música en la computadora y uso un software para ello, la mayoría de las veces lo que pasa es que al principio utilizo instrumentos que ya están ahí, en la computadora. Es algo muy intuitivo ya que cuando tengo una idea en la cabeza inmediatamente puedo ir a mi computadora a plasmarla y hacerla sonar con elementos que ya existen. Pero llega un punto en el que intento llevar esos instrumentos a otro nivel, intento cambiarlos para que suenen a algo nuevo.
Siempre estoy en búsqueda de sonidos que no parezcan sonidos básicos de computadora, que tengan calidez que el mundo acústico tiene. Muchas de las ideas que inicio en la computadora después son plasmadas en instrumentos reales, uso samples y demás grabaciones. Siempre es una combinación entre lo que está pasando dentro de la máquina y el mundo fuera de ella. El mundo está lleno de música y sonidos raros que puedes grabar y fácilmente convertirlos en una pieza musical.
¿Cuáles son los temas que abordas en tus canciones?
No decido sobre qué escribiré al momento de empezar una canción, muchas veces la letra viene de la música. Ya que primero que nada soy músico y después de eso, letrista. En este disco en específico, ‘Off The Radar’ encontrarán mucho contenido que tiene que ver con la experiencia de ser una persona en este mundo loco y extremista. Creo que la música es la manera a través de la cual proceso el mundo, lo que está dentro de mi y como ambos mundos se combinan. Es una documentación de la experiencia de vivir en este mundo, específicamente en Israel.
Los sencillos de este disco fueron ‘Dance While You Shoot’, una canción que habla sobre la dependencia de la sociedad hacia un gobierno que le da lo que necesita y al mismo tiempo le roba, manipula y mantiene en la ignorancia. ‘Pity’ estuvo inspirada en un caso de violación en grupo que fue filmada y compartida a través de la web. Los otros dos sencillos fueron ‘Toy’ y ‘Off The Radar’. Todos los ya mencionados cuentan con su propio videoclip, los cuales puedes ver ya en su canal de Youtube.
“Lo llevamos a un nivel más del día a día de ser mujer en un mundo de hombres, la necesidad de usar tus cualidades ‘ femeninas’ para moverte y las fronteras que pueden ser cruzadas mientras tratas de hacerlo” -Noga Erez, hablando de ‘Pity’.
¿Por qué elegiste el nombre de ‘Off The Radar’ para tu álbum debut?
‘Off the Radar’ es una canción del álbum que habla sobre la necesidad de los seres humanos de ser entendidos, escuchados, vistos, de que las personas a nuestro alrededor entiendan por lo que estamos pasando. Estuve pensando en esta urgencia de las personas y como se traduce a nuestra época, ya que vivimos en un periodo único donde podemos ser vistos y escuchados todo el tiempo de una manera muy directa. Y esto crea mucha confusión, especialmente para aquellos que no crecimos sin esta posibilidad.
¿Qué nos puedes contar de la producción de ‘Off The Radar’?
Cuando trabajas en algo creativo y sabes que vas a estar expuesto al mundo se crea un sentimiento de intimidación y al mismo tiempo de emoción dentro de ti. Porque cuando lo comparas a cómo empecé, yo siempre cree música por diversión y en cierto punto se convirtió en algo que “debía” hacer. Todo eso le agrega algo de rudeza a la experiencia de crear un álbum. El proceso siempre estuvo influenciado por todo eso, a veces era algo muy divertido y a veces algo muy frustrante al no poder crear algo de lo que verdaderamente estuviera orgullosa. Siempre hubo tensión entre ambos lados, pero creo que a final de cuentas es un álbum debut así que contiene liberación y una gran experiencia.
¿Qué puede esperar el público de tus shows en vivo?
Los live shows de hecho tienen mucha influencia en la música ya que generalmente suceden al mismo tiempo que se van creando las canciones, éstas a veces se transforman después de haberlas experimentado en vivo. Y en los shows la música suena muy parecida a como suena en el álbum pero la diferencia es que tienes a personas interpretándola en vivo y no es el típico show de música electrónica al que todos estamos acostumbrados, ya que tienes a 3 seres humanos tocando en vivo que cometen errores también. Esto lo hace muy interesante porque siento que cambia el significado y la esencia de las canciones.
¿Qué nos puedes contar de la escena alternativa en Tel-Aviv?
Creo que la escena musical de Tel-Aviv puede ser comparada fácilmente con las de otras capitales del mundo. Está altamente influenciada por el lugar y la cultura. Tiene muchas combinaciones de culturas porque Israel es un lugar donde habitan personas de todo el mundo que llegaron apenas hace 70 años. Es vibrante, llena de talento y hay shows sucediendo todas las noches. Hay muchos músicos y de hecho hay muchas mujeres que se dedican a la música, eso pasa mucho.
¿Qué consejos puedes darle a las chicas que quieren dedicarse también a la música?
Creo que ser una mujer en este mundo, pero más específicamente en el mundo de la música siempre requiere de algo extra que solo hacer arte, porque como mujer siempre hay algo extra que tienes que hacer, algo extra que probar. Es algo muy triste de decir pero creo que es algo que muchas artistas experimentan. Creo que como mujer debes saber navegar entre las reacciones que obtienes del mundo. Tienes que ser “ciega” y “sorda” de cierta manera respecto a todos los comentarios del mundo exterior, estar muy concentrada, ser genuina a lo que crees que debes hacer y cómo quieres presentarte ante el mundo, en como quieres que tu arte sea percibido. Quiero decirles que es muy importante revisar la esencia de lo que haces y estar en contacto con el por qué y cómo haces lo que haces, y que no te detengan o retrasen las mínimas influencias del mundo exterior o las voces que te dicen que no eres capaz.

This month we bring to you an incredible project all the way from, practically, the other side of the world. Electronic music influenced by hip hop and with impressive sounds to which you will have to pay a lot of attention to assimilate them. Her name is Noga Erez, an artist from Tel-Aviv. She grew up in a house where music was really important and she was always interested in every form of artistic expression. After diving into acting and dancing when she was younger, nowadays Noga produces music with a powerful message and we strongly believe that you should listen to it. After being raised in a very tense and political ambient, music turned into a refuge for her and weapon at the same time. She released several singles some months ago and now we can finally enjoy her debut album called ‘Off The Radar’. This is what she told us.
¿How did you get into music?
Art has always been a very important part of my life and education, I believe it is something very rooted in who I am. But my focus was not always just about music I was really experimenting with everything that had to do with art and specially art that has to do with stage. So I took acting lessons and I used to dance for a very long time. But at certain point I realized that music is really what I am about, so I learnt how to play different instruments and later on how to compose and arrange music. It was always a part of my life from home.

Your music has very unique sounds, how do you create them o where do they come from?
Basically because I create and produce music in the computer and I use a software to do it what usually happens is that at the very start of the process I start with instruments that are already in the computer and exist there, it gives me a variety of options and a lot of things to play around with, that makes it a very intuitive process because when I have an idea in mind I can almost immediately go ahead and make it something that exists. But there’s always a point where I try to take those instruments and change them and create new sounds.
Because I’m always looking for a sound that will not sound like the basic computer sound, that will have warmth, something that exists in the acoustic world. A lot of the ideas that I start in the computer are then later recorded on real instruments. It is always a combination of what happens inside the computer and the world outside of the machine, things that I record on the go while I’m walking somewhere. The world is full of music, everywhere, and it’s full of sounds and weird noises that you can just take and turn them into a musical piece.
What do you talk about the most in your lyrics?
I think that the process is something you can call a very emotional and intuitive, I don’t previously decide what I’m going to talk about I just go with I feel like doing at the moment and a lot of the times the lyrical content just develops as I write a song, as I create the musical atmosphere, it comes from the music most of the times. Because first of all I’m a musician and after that I’m a lyricist. Eventually when you look at the content and specially at this album ‘Off The Radar’ you can find a lot of content that has to do with the personal experience of being a human being in this world and all the crazy and extreme sides that the world that we live in today has. Because I think that music is a very natural way for me to process the world, what’s happening around me and what comes from inside of me. It’s a documentation of the experience that I go through in my life, of living in this world and living more specifically in Israel, that has a very specific situation.
The singles from this album were ‘Dance While You Shoot’, a song that talks about the dependency of a society towards its government which provides it with what it needs but also steals from it, manipulates and keeps it ignorant. The second one is ‘Pity’, provoked by a case of sexual assault that was recorded and shared on the internet. The remain two where ‘Toy’ that has a very interesting dynamic and ‘Off The Radar’, which Noga explained in detail to us. Why did you choose ‘Off The Radar’ as the title of your album?
‘Off the Radar’ is a song from the album that talks about the necessity of the human being to be understood, heard, seen. The necessity to be understood by the people around us about what we are going through. I’ve been thinking about this urge and how it translate to our time since we live in a very special and unique time where we can be seen and heard all the time in a very direct way, specially for the ones who didn’t grow up with this possibility.
What can you tell us about the production of ‘Off the Radar’? How was the process for you?
When you work in something creative and know that you will be exposed to the world there’s always something intimidating and exciting about it. Because when you compare to how I started I was always making music just for fun, because it was something that I liked doing but at a certain point it became about what I am and what I should do, sometimes that experience adds something rough to the whole creative process. It’s always a journey to try to come back to the beginning of the process, of being in a place where you create music just for yourself, just for the sake if creating music.
Even though you have goals and intentions of bringing that music to other listeners. So the process of making this album was always influenced by that, sometimes being very very fun and even silly and sometimes being very very frustrated about not being able of creating something that I could stand behind and that I feel I can release out to the world. It’s always the tension between those two sides that influenced the creation of the album, but I think that overall it is a debut album so it contains more release.
What can people expect from your live shows? Whats happens there?
The live shows sound a lot like the album because the work on them and the work on the recordings happen at the same time, both sides really influenced one another. When we were doing shows really influenced how we treated each song and we actually changed songs after we experienced them live. And eventually the shows sound pretty much the same as the album but you have people playing it live and is not the electronic music show live show as you would imagine it because it is played by 3 human beings that make mistakes and fall off the beat, it makes it really interesting because it adds a very human aspect and changes the meaning and the core of the music.
What can you tell us about the alternative scene in Tel-Aviv?
I think that the music scene in Tel-Aviv is something that you can easily compare to the ones from other capitals of the world, to London, Paris, etc. It is very influenced by the culture and the place, so it has a big mix of cultures, because Israel is a place that contains people that came from all around the world just 70 years ago, which is very new, to have a very diverse scene. The alternative scene is very vibrant, full of talent, you have shows and events happening everyday and every night, and you have a lot of musicians and a lot of female musicians actually, that happens a lot.
What kind of advice would you give to other women that want to pursue a career in music?
I think that being a woman in this world, but even more specifically in the world of art always requires something additional to just making art, because as a woman there’s always something extra that you have to do, you always need to kind of proof yourself beyond to was is expected. It is a very sad thing to say but I think is something that a lot of female artists experience. You really need to know how to navigate around reactions that you get from the world, you really need to be in a way blind and deaf to voices that you hear outside, and very focused and genuine to what you think you should do and how you want to present yourself through your art and how you want your art te look, sound or feel like. I would tell to young female artists that it is very important to check the core of what you do and to be in full touch with why you do what you do in order to stay true to what motivates you, so yo can’t be stopped, delayed or influenced by the voices around you that say that you cannot do it or you’re not capable of.
