¿En qué te inspiras al componer?

Me inspiro en mis viajes y el conocer nueva gente. También abordo temas personales y relaciones en mis canciones, como lidiar con una crisis, diferentes periodos de la vida y sus matices. Una cosa que realmente me sorprende también son los fenómenos de la “sociedad”, una psicosis colectiva o cierto comportamiento y como nos tratamos los unos a los otros en esos escenarios.

¿Qué caracteriza tu primer album 'Earfolder'

Podría decirse que el album es el soundtrack de un periodo de mi vida de diez años cuando estaba lidiando con una falta de amor y respeto por mi misma, problemas de salud mental y sobre cómo cambiar estado mental para poder superarlo. Fue una gran ola terapéutica para mi, y sentí que podía convertirme en otra persona al salir de ello. También es, viéndolo desde afuera, un proyecto muy divertido entre mis viejos amigos y yo que también eran mis compañeros de banda en ese momento. Pasamos tanto tiempo terminando este album y estoy muy orgullosa del resultado.

El sonido de este album a Teenager es bastante diferente.
¿Qué estabas tratando de lograr con este nuevo material?

Quería regresar a donde comencé, a las raíces de mi música básicamente. Al principio no tenia una banda completa, yo hacía mis propios beats y melodías en una vieja habitación en la casa de mis padres. Así que regresé a métodos viejos de trabajo y continué con el proceso donde podía tomar todas las decisiones. No tenía límites ni barreras. El resultado de ese proceso es Teenager, un EP que también está dedicado a mi hermano que ya no está con nosotros.

El cover art fue creado por Rickard Olausson, un fantástico fotógrafo y diseñador
con el que Annelie ha pasado mucho tiempo, por ejemplo en India. Rickard recopiló 
mucho material durante ese viaje y parte de él fue usado para Teenager. 
Son dos imágenes en una, un viejo callejón de Nueva Deli combinado con la imagen 
de su espalda.

Quería usar esta imagen porque es magia pura. También es una manera de representar mi deseo por exponer los sentimientos y la creatividad que sale de mi cabeza para resonar en los cuerpos y mentes de otras personas. Para mi, esa es la belleza del arte. – Annelie.

¿De qué trata KID?

KID trata sobre dos temas paralelos: el primero es sobre que tan fácil es guardar un secreto. En el video, de cierta manera estaba parada afuera de un edificio con ventanas que estaban representadas como ojos que podían mirar al mundo exterior. Los “ojos” eran como guardianes de secretos que no dejaban escapar la verdad de nadie y sobre como eso puede lastimar a la persona que quiere ayudar.

La otra historia paralela es sobre como cuidar al niño que vive dentro de ti, ese niño de seis o siete años que no quieres decepcionar, esa “configuración” original de ti que aún quieres respetar y enseñarle como atravesar este mundo.

Arms Grow:¿A quién le cantas en esta canción?

Le canto una canción de amor a una persona que es muy importante para mi. Esta es una de las pocas historias de amor que he escrito en mi vida. Fue escrita para representar el deseo de permanecer en la vida de esa persona de una manera no egoísta. Se trata sobre querer conocer a alguien al seguir sus brazos en esta vida.

Stuck:¿Cuando escribiste esta canción?

Escribí esta canción en mi viejo piano en el departamento de un amigo en la navidad del 2013 mientras pasaba por un periodo severo de depresión. No podía salir de él pero la canción habla sobre una meta-perspectiva, sobre lidiar con cómo crear algo solo para ver si esa creación es verdaderamente tú o no. Es como quedarte atrapado en las expectativas que tienes sobre crear algo que tú crees que es 100% tú en lugar de dejarte fluir, colocarte fuera de las reglas que tú has creado para este juego.

Creature:¿Qué nos puedes contar del proceso de creación de esta canción?

Me divertí mucho jugando con mis viejos sintetizadores Casio, junto con un vocoder que guía la canción a través de una de mis piezas mas pop. Esta canción como que destacó en el internet debido a su composición que tiende más hacia el pop de nuestra época si lo comparas con mis otras canciones. Aunque me gusta mucho así como la letra tiene un trasfondo de crítica envuelto en una melodía animada. Si recuerdo todo con precisión, me tomó mucho tiempo componerla. Pero el año pasado simplemente se sintió como el momento perfecto para lanzarla.

Teenager:¿Por qué mencionas que verás a esa persona como un 
adolescente siempre?

Esta canción es un saludo a mi hermano que nos dejó hace tres años. Para los que lo conocían saben bien lo que quería decir al llamarle ‘adolescente’. Siempre lo vi como una gran inspiración cuando se trataba de conservar la jovialidad e inocencia. Me enseñó como estar orgullosa de ser dedicada a algo, de tener ídolos musicales, a soñar, de ser capaz de sacrificar tiempo y energía para lograr un objetivo. Básicamente a disfrutar el tiempo mientras lo tengamos. El amaba el rock n roll y me inspiró a hacerlo también. Es algo que tendremos en común siempre.

Phantom Limb:¿Por qué elegiste hacer un cover de esta canción?

Decidí hacerlo cuando estuve de tour la primavera pasada como asistente de audio. Escuché mucho viejas playlists cuando estábamos matando el tiempo en la carretera. Amo viajar de esa manera, siento que la mente puede pensar en patrones diferentes. Regresé a casa con una sola nota escrita en una libreta: Hacer un cover de The Shins. Cuando regresé a casa fui directo al estudio de grabación y estuve trabajando ahí sin parar durante una semana completamente encantada por esa canción.

Después de un tiempo descubrí que la canción estaba basada en la historia de dos lesbianas viviendo en un pueblo pequeño completamente muertas de aburrimiento. Amo la temática de esta canción así como la vibra de las armonías. Espero que algún día The Shins la descubran jaja.

Durante agosto y septiembre Annelie se embarcará en un viaje por Suecia, 
Hungría y España . También se está preparando para presentarse en algunos 
países nórdicos durante septiembre, alrededor de las fechas de lanzamiento 
de su próximo sencillo, a la cual le acompañará un video. Su nuevo EP 
saldrá el 28 de septiembre, ¡no se lo pierdan!

What inspires your music?

What is it that characterizes "Earfolder"?

The sound from this album to "Teenager" is quite different, what were you trying 
to achieve in this new material?

I wanted to go back to where I started; to the roots of my music making, basically. From the beginning I was without a whole band. I was making beats and melodies in my old room back in my parents house. So, I got back to older working methods, and continued with the process where I could decide everything myself again. I had no boundaries, no limits, no one else than me to take care of. The result is Teenager, an EP that is also dedicated to my brother who is no longer with us.

What can you tell us about the cover art?

The cover art for Teenager is made by Rickard Olausson, a fantastic photographer and designer that I have spent so much great time with, for example in India. Rickard made a lot of nice footage while we were on the trip, and this image we used for the EP is also one of the creations from that journey. It’s like two pictures in one; an old alley in New Dehli combined with the shape of my back head and neck. I wanted to use this cover art, simply because of its pure magic. I can also refer to the picture as a way of me wanting to expose thoughts and creativity coming out of my head and mind, to other people – and let other peoples minds and bodies resonate to a message I am trying to send out. For me, that is the whole beauty of art.

KID: What is "KID" really about?

KID is about two parallell subjects: One is about how we all easily can keep secrets away from being revealed to one another. It was like, figuratively speaking, I was standing outside a building with windows that were portrayed like eyes glimpsing out on the outside world. The “eyes” were to me as gate keepers; keeping secrets and not letting out the truth about anyone, and how that could harm the one who wants help or something like that. The other parallel story is about taking care of the little kid inside of you; that little six or seven year old person that you don’t want to let down – that little original setup of the present you, that you still want to respect and show how to get by in this world.

Arms Grow: Who are you singing to in this song?

I am singing a love story to a person that is very important for me. This is one of very few love stories I’ve written in my life. 🙂 The meaning of this song, is a very non selfish way of wanting to stay by the side of this person. It’s about wanting to get to know someone by following their aims in life.

Stuck: When did you write this song?

I wrote this song on my old piano in a friends flat during Christmas time 2013, and I was in a quite severe depressive state. Couldn’t really get out of it. But the song Stuck is more of a meta perspective; dealing with how create something just to see if that creation is really “you” or not. It’s like getting stuck in the expectations you have of making something that is 100% true to yourself, instead of just get into the flow and place yourself outside all the rules and frames you’ve put up for this creative kind of game.

Creatures: What can you tell us about the creation process of this song?

I had so much fun playing with my old CASIO synths 🙂 together with a vocoder track that leads the song forward through one of my more pop oriented songs. This song “slipped through the net” sort of, because of its conventional and pop modern sound if you compare it my other tracks. Though I really like this song and the lyrics; it has a critical undertone wrapped in a cheerful suit. If I remembering everything correctly, I wrote on it during a long period of time. Last year it just felt like the perfect moment – it was finally time to get the pieces together.

Teenager: Why will you see that person as a teenager always?

It is a positive thing. This song is a salute to my brother, who passed away three years ago. For those who know our brother very well, they know what I mean with this. I’ve always seen him as a great inspiration when it comes to assent to ones childish and playful sides. He taught me to be proud of getting dedicated in something; to have music idols, to long and dream, to be able to sacrifice time and energy to get to your goal. Basically also just to have a great time while you can. He loved rock’ n roll and inspired me to do so, too. We will always have that in common as a special bond.

Phantom Limb: Why did you choose to make a cover of this song?

I got the idea while I was away on a tour last spring (as a live crew member). I listened to a lot of old playlists of mine when we were out killing miles on the road. I love being out traveling like that, I feel it as the mind can think in new and different patterns. I came home with only one little line in my note book, and it said “Make a cover of The Shins’ ‘Phantom Limb’ “. When I came home I went directly to the studio and sat there non stop for a week, totally mesmerized by this song. After a short while, I discovered that the theme was based on a story about two lesbian girls living in a small town, bored to death. I absolutely love the theme and the vibe of the harmonies – it feels like they are pending between major and minor. Now I am hoping for The Shins to discover my cover as a huge thanks for all the inspiration, haha. 🙂

What can we expect from you for the rest of the year?

We will head for some summer festival gigs in Sweden, Hungary and Spain during August and September! We are also preparing for a smaller tour in the Nordic countries in September, around the dates of my upcoming single. I am SUPEREXCITED to share single number two with you: it’s a cover song and a killer hit! 🙂 We are releasing a new video for the single, too. The new EP is out September 28. Don’t miss out!
